I did once get a poem published in a sales newsletter.  I wrote a poem at the end of a seminar I took, and they published it for me.

Writing poetry does have its advantages.  I proposed to my wife with this song.

I mostly write spontaneously.  I sit in front of a blank page or computer screen, and write whatever comes to mind.  I tend to think my best work is done that way.  Occasionally, I re-write and edit and ponder and edit some more.  A little too contrived for my taste.
